How Vegetarianism Nourishes Your Soul

Apart from the common reasons of health, environment and money, spirituality is one of the main reasons why people turn vegetarian. There seems to be an earnest association between vegetarianism and nourishment at a deeper level that is, nourishment of the soul. Spiritual nourishment is almost as important as physical nourishment and we must learn how to satisfy this basic, but often overlooked, need of ours.

Nutrition not only involves the food that we eat, but also the many colors, scents and also the invisible particles contained in our food materials, that tend to attract pure light, which is essential for a healthy and joyful living. The choices we make in our lives are, hence, often a result of eventful significance.

Vegetables, fruits and grains require sunlight for their growth and thus it can be stated that they are, in fact, some form of light itself. Conscious and peaceful eating is vital in developing the qualities of the heart that is so essential for spiritual fulfillment. Hence, it just comes out as basic sense to consume something that gets its nourishment directly from sunlight, since it is the very source of all the energy on earth. This causes our essence and our emotions to illuminate and hence leads to the nourishment of our soul.

It is said that, “our body is our temple” and anything that enters this temple, has a profound effect on who we become as a person. So, when we nourish our bodies by consuming, healthy, nutrient-dense foods from the plants, we are indirectly nourishing our spirit and our souls. The quality of the food, that you consume, and its various physical properties, not only alters your mind and emotions, but also changes your personality and appearance.

When we focus our diets on vegetables and fresh fruits that are naturally produced, we are, actually, learning to live in harmony with the environment and also connecting with the nature on a deeper level. Committing to vegetarianism, thus, helps you to nourish your soul and kinder to your spirit. Can you think of any other perfect food than this?

How A Vegetarian Diet Improves Personal And Environmental Health

It has already been established that vegetarians tend to be healthier than their meat eating counterparts. The percentage of vegetarians who suffer from diseases, such as high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, colon cancer, diabetes and cardiac disorders are less than their meat eating counterparts.

Even when a vegetarian eats the same amount of salt as a meat eater and/or does less exercise, their blood pressure still remains lower. A lot of studies have shown that vegetarians don’t tend to get colon cancer, due to differences in the bacterial flora that exists in their colon.

A lot of factors in a vegetarian diet are responsible for better health. Vegetarians tend to consume three times as much fiber as meat eaters, which has effectively been shown to decrease blood glucose, cholesterol levels and shield the body against colon cancer.

Antioxidants, found primarily in plants, form an integral part of the vegetarian diet. They protect the cells from damage caused due to oxidation, and hence reduce the risk of arthritis, heart disease, cancer and other diseases.

A vegetarian diet includes a lot of isoflavones, which are good anti-oxidants. These are a type of phytochemical, and are found mostly in soy-based foods. Research has shown that isoflavones improve bone health and reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Vegetarians eat less cholesterol and saturated fat than meat eaters, resulting in better heart health and reducing the risk of cancer and diabetes. Heme Iron in meat increases the risk of cancer and heart disease. Since vegetarians don’t eat meat, they are never exposed to this.

And lastly, vegetarianism not only insures optimal body health for you, but also that of the environment and animals. You will live more in tune with the environment, which has a positive effect on you, both mentally and emotionally.
